Fifth Gear was a show Jeremy Clarkson used to be on with Tiff Needeell, but then Jeremy ended up starting his own with Top Gear. It is a higher quality show by far, in my opinion.

OK, let's clear this thing up, living in the UK I can give you the history on this subject.
Top Gear is a show which has been on BBC TV over here since the 1970's, Jeremy Clarkson and Tiff Needell used to be on the show together, a couple of years ago the BBC decided to axe Top Gear, at this point Jeremy had already left the show. Channel 5 TV immediately signed up Tiff and put out their Fifth Gear show which is a similar format to the old Top Gear and is a good quality show, the BBC then decided it was a bad idea that they had axed Top Gear so they re-launched it! The only person they had left at the BBC who was capable of pulling off this u turn was Jeremy Clarkson because Tiff, Quentin and Vicki had all defected to Fifth Gear, the "new" Top Gear is now an hour long show with studio chat, road tests and features. Top Gear has the highest audience of all motoring shows in the UK but Fifth Gear is still a great show and has had some really good features on. Jeremy has only ever worked for the BBC and has never been on Fifth Gear. Hope this clears things up, if you have any questions please fire away. |

Top Gear is probably unique in the fact that the BBC who make the show are funded by the TV licence payers in the UK, in other words there are no commercial breaks between or during shows, this means no advertisers to answer to, so say for example Top Gear thinks the new Ford is a load of trash they can say so and Ford can't pull their advertising contract with them because they won't have one!
