Post Help Please!

Hi everyone, I don't know very much about cars yet. But, I want to ask all those that might know this question. I recently bought a 2001 eclipse, and somehow, now, everytime that I step on the gas pedal, the tachometer bar goes up to a high RPM then comes back down a lower RPM before the car will start to move. For example, I'm traveling down the road at 25 mph on fourth gear, so the tachometer is at somewhere around 1400-1600 rpm, if I step on the gas lightly while it's moving, the rpm meter raises just a little bit (about 500 rpm) then comes back down, but it I floor the gas pedal, it raises up about 2000 rpm. The same thing happens if I'm traveling 25 mph and shift to 5th gear and floor the gas. The RPM meter will go up to 4500 rpm before it comes back down to 1600-1700 rpm then the car will start to move. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong with the car? Transmission? Clutch? Oil Change?

Your clutch is worn out dude, you better get it to a tech ASAP. It is just slipping. Clutch slippiage will **** you over if you dont get your car to a shop immediately, you may not even be able to start your car in any gear, none the less start it with out causing damage to the flywheel, or having it just rn into something because you cant stop the car.

Clutch and Pressure plate usually come together as a set and are replaced at the same time. The clutch grips the flywheel and is forced against the flywheel by the pressure plate (also called clutch cover)

Oh and by the way, your clutch is slipping badly!!! If you dont get it relaced SOON, you are not going to be able to move the car at all. And baby it around if you have to. The more it slips the moer it will bake your flywheel. First stage of the flywhell being Fu(&ed will be bluing, then it will develop hairline cracks... either way , its a goner!

25mph in 4nd gear?! , if you cluch was worn out, the rmp would actually raise and the car would not move at all, but if the rmp goes down, then the clutch is gripping well.

Now, if you mean why is it that the car behaves that way, it would be in general in most stick shift cars, you can't speed up a car at 25 mph in 4th gear or 5th.

I've just replaced the clutch not even a year ago. How could it be worn out already? My friends have civics and other manual cars and they had no problems with the clutch for over two years. Are you sure it's the clutch?

Well, sometimes i can't shift to 2nd gear if the weather outside is cold. So i go from first and if second is stuck, i skip to third. I don't want to force it to second gear if it won't go smoothly. I've just replaced the clutch about a year ago, can the clutch get worn out that fast?

Anyways, if I am to get a new clutch set, will this be everything that is needed? Here is a site for an ebay auction, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW

And is it easy to replace the clutch yourself, or is it better to bring it to a shop? Thanks everyone.

Something similar happened to my 240sx a couple of months ago. The clutch was slipping horribly a couple of days after I changed my master and slave cylinders. I would step on the gas and the rpms would rise pretty fast but I wouldn't gain any speed. I adjusted my clutch pedal engagement, and the problem was solved immediately. Hope that helps.
btw: my clutch is now like a year old too.

my question to you is what are you doing at 25mph on 5th gear?

how much is 25 mph in kph ?

isn't it about 40-60kmh??

anyhow could be clutch, could be the gears itself, could jsut well be you dunno how to drive just playing...best thing to do is take it to a garage and have it checked.

The clutch can be worn out already if:
1 installed or adjusted impropperly
2 you ride with your foot resting on the clutch pedal. No you dont have to be pressing very hard
3 you slip the clutch when you change gears.
4 you drive the crap out of the car

P.S. An oil change will not affect you clutch , unles the spilled oil inside you bellhousing (VERY unlikely)

How did you adjust the clutch pedal engagement?

I drive the car normally. I shift after it reaches about 2000 or 2100 rpm. The only times I shift at high speeds is if I'm going up a ramp on a highway. Oh, and I also raced three times in the past year, I didnt shift until almost redlining. The races weren't very far though, just close to a quarter mile each.
