Say you have two 6 cylinder engines, both have the same displacement, technology (# of valves and things like that), and are built of the same metal.
which one would produce more torque,? more hp? which one would rev hitgher? Does the shape even matter? |

Short answer:
all things being equal (bore x stroke, flow into engine, etc...) an inline 6 would make more torque, and probably more hp. long answer If 1 has a longer stroke it might make more torque. One of my teachers are UTI said that Inline-6's are great for torque because of their long and heavy cranks shaft, they have a lot of inertia, compared to even a v8 or v6. An Inline-6 for the most part is a better engine, it's supposedly perfectl balanced, is great for torque, and can still rev quite high given it has a short enough stroke. A v6 is only better because it's not as long, but it's also wider. Otherwise a v6 is pretty much a bad design, they are unbalanced, to run smooth they have to have a weaker designed crank (split pin cranks) but companies have made them plenty strong anymore. If u want the greatest it torque it seams u want a long stroke inline 6. My dads dump truck has a 854ci Turbo charged Inline-6 diesel. it makes plenty of torque to accelerate a 23 ton truck to 30 quicker than my beater (80hp nissan sentra). If you look at many semi trucks, dump trucks, and similar they all will most likely have an inline 6. |
