Goodday good people of TREMEK!
I have a 1.4i golf MK1 2002 model which i just purchased. And im looking in making it a monster over the 1/4 mile. There are a lot of fast 2.0L but i want to make this the fastest 1.4i around? But here is the trick. I want to keep it a N/A car. No turbo's. And maybe a little bit of GAS. I have been scouting around im going to go the throttle body route! We have jenvey thottle bodies here is South Africa, Which i believe are one of the best around? I ave done a little mods to her. Here is what i have done. Gas flowed head 276" cam Bro Speed branch and freeflow system. K&N full induction system. And a prologic chip. Her best time over the 1/4 mile is 16.8 over the 1/4 mile. Not bad for a N/A tuned 1.4i But on the highway she can get to 200km quiet quickly? strange? Ive clocked her at 220 km but like i have said i want to make her a 1/4 mile car. Please help me fellow STREET RACERS!!!. St_Lunatic When in doubt, INCREASE THE BOOST!!!

this is what ive been tought...
at 5500 rpm a na engine should produce about one hp per ci of displacement... sometimes a little more but not usually... (a 1.4 is probably about 85 ci {85 +/- hp @ 5500}so if it redlines at 6500 call it 110 hp on a good day with heavy modifications to the induction and exhaust... but still regularly aspirated) if you want to double your ponny power you need to turbo, supper or nitrous charge the son of a *****. I've owned a few older VWs, including an 84 Mk I GTI, before purchasing my 24V VR6. Let me tell you this: 1.4 litres is not exactly going to get you a fast 1/4 mile time without forced induction. As a matter of fact, it's quite an oxymoron. My Mk I had a built 2.0L 8V motor out of a 95 GTI. It had a cold air intake, ECU chip, BroSpeed header, G-grind cam, Magnaflow exhaust, and a close-ratio drag tranny. Still, it only produced about 140hp at the flywheel, roughly 110hp at the wheels. You're gonna have to do some incredible shit to that 1.4L to make it run even a decent time in the 1/4 mile. My advice is: A) Get blown (supercharger, turbo, etc...) and spend a lot of money on parts (suspension, some racing slicks, a waaaay better tranny than you have now, etc...) B) Spend a lot of money on the essential motor parts and suspension, then slap a Webber side-draft or two onto the motor, construct a rollcage, gut the interior and make yourself a potent little track racer. C) Motor swap with all of the above.
Making your 1.4L into a drag car is like building a schoolbus for the slalom course.....it doesn't make too much sense but it can be done, at great cost. The decision is entirely yours, so good luck and keep on DUBBIN!

HEY HEY.
Thankx alot for the info. I think that i am going to go the 2.0i 16V route. I can get a lot more power out of the 2.0i than the 1.4i. If i had to turbo my 1.4i i would say that i would get around 150 hp (111 kw) safely and 200 hp ( 149 kw) not so safe. But with a 2.0i i can get safely 200hp ( 149kw) and crazy big power 300hp+ ( 223Kw) and still drive her around. So im going to go the 2.0i route. Sorry for the KW figures. We work in KW here in South Africa. LOL We have a lot of fast little MK1's here in SA. The guys on average with there 2.0i 16V motors have between 295hp (220KW) and 402hp ( 300Kw) on the wheels here. There is a golf MK1 that has the record for the highest KW for a golf. It has 552 hp (412kw) on the wheels!!!, but has never had a run yet. SCARY!

A 2.0L 16V is a very good way to go. Another option would be to consider getting a 20V head and running it N/A with some dual side-draft Webers. Or just spend around $2-3,000 for a 1.8L turbo motor (180hp stock), which is very tuner-friendly. For about another $1-1500 you can get a chip, intercooler, and downpipe giving you around 225hp. That was the plan for my Mk I Rabbit, but I ended up selling it to buy my VR6.
One question Lunatic.....I noticed you calling your 2002 Dub an Mk I. Here in the states an Mk I Golf is considered a 1975-1984 Rabbit, which in Germany were called Golfs. Golfs here didn't start production until the 85 model. A 2002 Golf here is considered an Mk 4, meaning 4th generation Golf. Please clarify if possible. Good luck with your 16V swap!

hey 24Vr666
thankx a lot for the infomation. Hey i thought of getting a 20v fom the golf 4 but its a bit expensive here. I have priced the 16v motors here and if i put it in $ for you, we are looking at between $800 to $1000. A 20V is around $1500 to $2000. And a 1.8T from the golf 4 $2000 to $2500. Here in SA we do not have some of the golfs that you guys have in the States. Like the R32. We have a GTI 160Hp and a GTI-R which has the R32 kit but has more power than the GTI. its the same motor, but just tweaked. It sits with 200hp. Your right the MK1 stopped production from around 84-85. But here is south africa they have been so popular that they have carried on production of them. You can even pick up one right now. Its called a golf chico, golf citi.com or the top of the range one called a golf life. They still have the same shap just improved.

That is sooooo sick!! Can you get those in a 2 door?! That's seriously the coolest ****ing thing I never knew existed!! I wish I had the cash to import one of those, man, the things I could do to that car. So is that what yours looks like? Last but not least, how much more do those weigh than the older ones?
The R32 has 240hp (178Kw) here. I own a 03 GTI 24V VR6. It's a 2.8L 6 cylinder 6 speed. Stock, the flywheel hp is 203 (174 at the wheels, 150Kw). I threw on a cold air intake that I made, and then got a 2.5" Magnaflow exhaust. It's got about 220hp (165Kw) at the flywheel and around 190 something (142Kw) at the wheels now with about 215-220lb./ft of torque (300Nm). On the freeway i'm faster than an R32, and on launch I'm about the same as an R. If you supercharge or turbo your Golf, you should have no problem getting into the 13s or better.
