Yeah, I hope someone can help, I'd like to know how to get hold of some carbon fibre, if it is easy to mold, and set etc. I'd like to have a go at making my own bits and bobs outta the stuff!

I think you should try making fiberglass mold before you start trying carbon fibre. fibreglass is 2-6 times cheaper depending on the type of stuff you want. and i dont think you want to spend like 200s on just 5gal of expoy resin and then the carbon fibre mating is like 1+s a square foot. So what im trying to tell you dont waste your cash till you learn the basic with fibreglass both have the same concept just one is more expensive.

I work with carbon fiber often... The above post is correct! Try fiberglass first! It is much cheaper!!! Fiber glass will cost $5 for about 10sq ft, Carbon is about $30-$50 for the same amount, unleass you can buy scraps and leftover (they are on Ebay all the time under Carbon Fiber in Industrial categoryThe fiber glass is softer and more flexible as well. That will make it easier to experiment with. Making things from carbon fiber and making things with a good pattern look to it are two different things. Learn to make parts first and then worry about making them with the carbon look everyone wants!

More in next post...

Also you can try polyester resin with the fiberglass. You can mix it to cure in as little as 15-20 minutes. Much easier for the impatient beginner. But it will not stick well to carbon fiber! Epoxy resin will work with both fiberglass and carbon. It costs about three times as much and the fast cure variety takes about 6-8 hours if you appy heat to it (even heat the whole time, like in a huge oven)

You should be able to buy a gallon of poly resin and 10sq ft of fiberglass for about $30-$35. That should be good to let you get a little feel for it. Then realize that carbon costs 4-5 times as much and is harder to work! Also buy PLEANTY of rubber gloves! That crap will get on you in places you never even touched!!! :-)

How long it takes just depends on how crafty you are. The better you are at working with stuff, the quicker you will pick it up. Yes you can learn it alone. I learned it by myself though trial and error.

Cheers for the replies, I'll take the advice about playing around with f/glass first, rather than jumping straight in at the deep end with CF.

also where old old cloth that your going to throw away because its a ***** to be itchy from the fine fibreglass and wear a mask when cuting fibreglass you dont want the same effect as players cigs "instant nicotene" (cutting your LUNGS with mirco fibres)

Easiest way is to make plaster of fiberlass cast of your item...

If you are making an item from scratch... Make it in foam and wood and fiberglass... then make the cast/mold of it... Then make your part in fiberglass or carbon.

Make sure your mold is strong enough to be broken away fron the original piece (plug is correct name)

My guage pod on my dash was as follows:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...n/Dsc00320.jpg
Armour-alled dash good!
Used stacked craft foam discs to get shape of guage.
Set on dash and supported into position with modeling clay...
Built up shape of pod with clay, pinch at a time...
Carefully loosed clay guage pod from dash.
Covered outside of pod with 3 layers of fiberglass strips--doesnt have to be pretty
Covered with four more layers...let cure overnight
Washed out clay
Skim coat of bondo on inside of mould and sanded all back out...twice
Coated with 4-5 coats of rain-X inside
Put 3 layes of Fiber glass inside mould.. then again..let cure
Broke loose from mould (erusable if needed)
Sanded smooth...texture coated...cut hole for guage...mounted in car!

styrofoam with a final coat of bondo. Dont forget to make your moulds in pieces so you can get them off the plug and your final part out of the mould without damage.
