Look at Cherokees from around 91-96. Comfortable, the 4.0 is awesome, great power, run for 100's of 1000's of miles, no electric controls for the 4x4. Its a vacuum disconnect which uses a little tube to work it. Sometimes that tube can get melted but its not too hard to fix. The 4x4 is a lever so there's no buttons to wear out either. Pre-91 is still good, but they came with a lower output 4.0. I think 87 and older used a 2.8 V6 from Chevy (same as in a Fiero or S10 from the same years). Their a little more questionable but the S10 we had with the 2.8 ran awesome. 97-01 are decent, but pricey. I got mine for $4500, and its easy to find older ones for cheaper. Nissans are also very reliable. And cheap. My wife's 2wd runs great and is just now starting to wear out the clutch. Its a 96 and has who knwos how many miles cuz the odo don't work.
