Transmission Getting Stuck in Gears

My 92 325i has been recently getting stuck in gears. Automatic 4spd.

My tranny gets stuck in gears at random when in drive. It will not come out of 1st gear when stuck in that gear,even when pushed past the normal shift point to the redline (normal shift point 6000 rpm, redline 6500 rpm) and when in 4th will get stuck and not come out of 4th when slowing to a stop until it shudders at around idle rpm and shifts into first where its stuck again.

An easy way to stop it from acting up is to put the car into 3 which will work perfectly for the entire time it is in 3. Another thing to note is that with a slight tap backward or forward of the shift lever when in drive(kind of like a squential manual gearbox, but not nearly as far) will cause it to shift out of first or 4th when it is stuck.

I was just curious if any of u have had any similar issues with any other type of car/tranny and if so, what can be done, if anything? If u have any suggestions id be glad to hear em.
