I know that in the fbody cars if you have steering wheel radio/CD controls, they are not useable w/ an aftermarket head unit. Good luck in finding something you can use. Post a pic of your car so that my "yank" ass knows what it is....
You might have some luck by looking at some of the brand names websites and emailing them the tech question.

we get it as OPEL astra over here , anyways try to search for JVC head unit , some models support steering wheel controls , i think you gotta forget the board screen , had the same issue with a '05 Renault clio sport , JVC worked fine

if you've got the steering wheel controls and you buy and aftermarket headunit with a remote the there's a thing that will allow you to still use the wheel controls by configuring a little module type thing to send the proper signals to teh radio.
Stock radios go like this: Wheel mounted control--->radio aftermarket thingy I'm talking about does this: Wheel controls--->reciever thing---signal--->aftermarket unit
