So I think I'm going to buy one of the street legal 250cc dirt bikes pretty soon, depending on how well I do doing the work on the samurai myself. My question is: of the big four japanese manufacturers, are any of them unreliable? Is there anything I should look out for besides common sense things?

i have a yamaha 250cc i'm trying to get rid of... i find that the bike is great but lacks the power i want, it's 4 stroke...
my friends all have or do have honda's and they all have had valve problems with them... there's are newer then mine and i have had no vavle troubles with mine... i say go with KTM or Yamaha...thats just what i think. if you want a good road bike you should get the 450's plenty of power

Stick with Yami or KTM. As mentioned the Hondas have had valve trouble. If you want something a bit less high strung the Suzuki DRZ400 would be the pick of the bunch. None of the high strung bikes like road use very much.

Thanks guys, the drz-400 is a good bike for a first time rider? Unfortunately I didn'y grow up on dirtbikes so I'm not sure what I should be looking for. I was kind of worried that hopping on a 400 right off the bat would be like buying a gsxr-1000 as a first bike.

bikes only go as fast as u want them to.
. but na a gsxr1000 would go faster then a dr400 in one gear.when the dr is in 6th lol. ![]() i would think a 400 would be ok for a first bike. alot of sport bike riders start off on 400s.so cant see why a 400 dirt bike would be much differnt.it would probly be easyer to ride then a vfr400. |

the drz isnt a bad beginner bike if you know your limits but if your the kinda guy that jumps on and thinks hes travis pistrana or valintino rossi right off the bat then you might need a smaller cc bike but if your a mature person it wouldnt be a bad bike to start out on. have you even ridden any kind of bike before?
