I'm not gonna hop on it and start doing 50mph wheelies over jumps or anything, I'm just not sure if the powerband is rough for beginning riders or anything.

since its a fourstroke the powerband will be alot more predictable than a 2

The DRZ is definately the pick if you are going to use it for commuting as well as trail riding. It will still have plenty of kick but will be a lot smoother than a highly strung 450.

Also it will place less strain on the gearbox. I have heard that the boxes (on CRF/YZF/WRF etc) don't like bitumen use, not to mention that they are highly strung and will require more maintanance.

Whats wrong with that? I know plenty of ppl that had litre bikes right off the bat and didnt have a problem, then there are squids who manage to off themselves on fzr400's. Its ppl that kill, not guns/bikes/fast cars.

I'd definitely agree with some of your folks on here that have said that the perfect bike for a beginning Supermotard freak would be a Suzuki DR400.

I actually went riding last weekend, and I got my hands on a KTM 525 for a few days. That's a nice bike, and it had pleeeenty of power for the asphault. gotta remember - most SM bikes aren't much heavier than their offroad conterparts (as in my YZF weighs 207 and has 48 HP atm). Their weight/power ratios are through the roof, so they'll get up and go as long as their tuned correctly. Wheelies on the street @ 50 mph? Who does that anymore........?

But, in the end - it's all about what you really want. What look you're going for, what amount of power you want, and how much you're willing to pay.

Get pics as soon as you get it, so that the rest of us can drool.....

Good luck man.

So if I went for the 400, would I be better off getting a 650?
