Question Is the amount of fuel burned in...

Is the amount of fuel burned in 1st gear @ 5500RPM's the same amount of fuel burned in 6th gear @ 5500RPM's?

I'd think more fuel is burned in 6th, More Incoming air/fuel ratio

I would think that more fuel would be burnt in 6th gear as the engine would be working harder to propel the car forward:thumpup:

Hmmmm....good question. I'm gunna go ahead and say that more would be burnt in 1st gear due to the fact that the car was propelled from a stop and that the 1st gear is a power gear and the gearing is tighter in order to get the car into the powerband whereas 6th gear is an overdrive/cruising gear and has better gear ratio in 6th and the car has also been moving and would be under more inertia/forward force maybe using less gas. Then again, the speed you would have to be at in 6th gear to acheive those rpm's would be a high speed and then you would have to take into account wind resistance and that too has alot of force on the car that I would imagine would cause for more gas to be used. IDK.....Good question.

This one is a no brainer;
The original poster made no reference to starting speed so we can only assume he refers to steady state operation at 5500 rpm. Drag increases with the square of speed. Obviously more fuel will be burned in in 6th by far due to the load the engine is seeing from significantly higher aero resistance.

6th gear, more resistance from the wind, and overall the engine is working its ass off to keep going forward

Under WOT and X rpm the amount of fuel its the same, what its different, its the time under WOT and certain rpm.
In 6th those 5,5k rpm are there for a longer period of time creating more fuel consumption.
In other words, the fuel injection can not give more fuel than WOT is programed to at X rpm , no matter the gear or speed

Im with 01mmmz28 on this one, its logical that you need more power and more juice to get moving than to keep on moving, there is less stress on your engine in 6th gear therefor you consume less.
