go to your local auto parts store and just check out a haynes book or chilton book for that year car. Don't buy it, just flip through the pages until you find what you are looking for, see how it works and go home and fix it. I do it all the time.
Otherwise I know squat about automatic belts, doubt it will be cheap if it's not just a simple fix.

go to your nearest nissan dealer and they will fix it for free. by law, they have to fix all restraints on their cars or something like that. I did this about two years ago, they ordered the belts, called me up when they received them, and replaced them absolutely free, they even washed my car

ok, so i called my local nissand ealer to ask them about this 'seatbelt' law, and they had discrepencies about it because the seat belt is automatic, they said because it has moving parts.....hhhmmm. so i set up an appointmant tomorrow so they can check it out. so i got to thinkin, and i called the nissan usa headquarters, and and was asking them about it. legal issues aside (i.e.-any laws regarding restraint systems), he pulled up the warranty info for my car with my vin no. and said that there are no time limits or mileage limittaions and that the seatbelt is covered. however, his "gateway" whatever that is, is down and couldnt verify whether or not that was the only seatbelt option available for that model year, if it was, he said it it would most likely be covered, if not, well then we have to got to the legal side of things. so..... if any of you guys know where to find info on this" seatbelt law" thingy ma jingy that would be awesome

i also called the n.t.s.b. a.k.a. the national highway transportation safety board, and they said they didnt really know, unless the car was under warranty. but he said he would do some research and let me know, so at this juncture, it looks like it is covered except maybe for parts? which doesnt really make sense to me, i think i may get ****ed on this one. i need some conrete resources and info. im on a mission. b18 , and christian, i need to know where you got this info!!!!

I don't have the law and the nissan dealer is simply protecting them selves from the fact that there are PARTS of the AUTOMATIC system that might not be covered if they have been broken vs wearing out over time. Just have it looked at and as long as it's a reputable dealer, which most are, you should be fine. They might try to make you sign off on a "diagnosis charge" to pay the technician to look at the problem, test the parts and determine which parts are bad and how to fix it properly. Unfortunately, most dealers will not allow you have your car looked at without agreeing to the fee, which could range from (here in arizona) $90-$140 for the first hour. NOW, here is the key:
If the parts that are bad are covered, the warranty pays for the diagnosis. HOWEVER If the parts are NOT covered, the diagnosis charge will go TOWARD the repairs, they don't charge you the diagnosis on top of the repairs needed. NOW, 9 times out of 10 the seatbelt will get covered. All the dealer is saying is that there is a 10% chance it will not be and to recognize that. ![]()
