I was thinking of buying a 2002 WRX from a dealer of mine. Its got 90,000 miles but runs good and thight. He wants $9500.00 for it. It doesnt seem to be running at full boost and I was wondering how much boost I can get from the stock parts? I was thinkgin just a simple XS boost controler or something cheap. Its also got a "WTS"? intercooler with BOV and looks like some aftermarket piping on it. I was thinking for just an everyday car, but would like to max out whatever boost the stock turbo can run.

Since I had an 04 WRX and used the same XS manual cheapo boost controller you're talking about, I can tell you that 14-15 psi is where you will safely max out at. Just don't floor it in 5th gear going 60, or the boost will spike to 18 or so and you'll get a real violent fuel cutoff.

they run 8-10psi in 1st and 2nd gears then around 14-14 psi in 3rd up. you dont want to just slap a boost controller on there and turn it up though. allthough i have seen peaplie run around 17psi on a stock set up. just make sure you have boost gauge and dont get boost creep. just save up and buy a cobb reflash to rasie your boost the safe way. my 2cents

For about the same price of a cobb generic flash handheld, you can get a custom tune made for your car. My vote is against the Cobb.

get an exhaust and you'll be much happier. I was thinking about getting an '02 myself for a while, so I can tell you to definately watch out for the transmission. second gear goes on those 5 speeds if they're abused, so when you test drive it, rev it high in first and shift into second to see if anything feels off. If you don't think it's running at full boost it's probably been tinkered with and destroyed, before plunking down your money I'd have it checked out by a mechanic, go to www.nasioc.com and do a search, every question you could think to ask has been answered a hnudred times there.

This is what I think you should do. Get a Cobb Accessport and a TBE (downpipe and catback). Dont get the TBE without some sort of EM (engine management) or you might get boost creep. When you get the Cobb Accessport and TBE you can go to a Stage 2 map. You should notice a nice gain in power and torque especially if you get a protune after.
BTW I recommend the Cobb Accessport. I know alot of WRX/STi guys running this EM and they have nothing bad to say about it. Its one of the best out there. If you need more info go to www.nasioc.com. Just search and you can find anything you need there. |
