Default Ford Ranger Problem...

hey my father has a 1999 ford ranger 3.0l v6 and the other day we went to g out to lowes and the truck was running like shitt.. when i startd it it reved itself up to 3500 rpms and dropped and stalled .. my first thought was .. WTF?! soo i restarted it adn it was running really rough .. and smelt like it was running really lean ... the morning after .. it ran fine and just yesterday .. it did the same thing again .. Any ideas???

see i was thinking that the Tps was bad or the Oxy sensor .. but both those sensors would trigger the checkengine light .. i hope its not gettin ready to take a shytt on me here . its got 80k + miles (hwy/ ny traffic miles )
and had the engine replaced at 65k back in 01?for piston slap with a brand new engine not a rebuild 1..

some of the ford trucks we have at my work have a similar problem and the IAC (idle air control) valve was the culprit
