Default Ac Compressor?

hey guys i just recently bought myself a 99 olds bravada and the only problem ive been able to discover is the Ac Compressor will not engage when i trun it on .. the heat blows fine and everything else is strong it was owned by an older woman the truck has been babied for the 97k miles it has on it but any ideas on the ac compressor problem ?? could it be out of freon and not engaging to prevent damage?

if it should engage if there is freon or not, freon is no longer in use, but you can get a leak detection kit to find the source of the problem/leak, since its an american you can probably get the unit itself dirt cheap

if there is NO 'freon' (refrigerant), the compressor will not cycle on and off, if there is a little 'freon' it will cycle on and off frequently, most a/c shops will put a dye in the system to check for leaks, but look around the orifice tube and/or the high pressure switch(normaly located near the receiver/dryer/accumulator) for signs of oil, trace all lines from condensor to a/c compressor, look for oily areas

if you have to replace the compressor, from past experiences, you need to replace all components, i know this sounds expensive, but if you dont get all the lines cleaned out and if there is any metal fragments left anywhere, you will be buying another compressor in the not too distant future, just speakin from experience

better to spend it now and get all new parts (compressor, orifice tube, receiver/dryer) and buy a good flush to clean out the lines and condensor

hope this helps

speakin of the clutch, the compressors on some chevy's ive worked on break the tabs ( 3 little arms ) on the compressor, pulley will turn but thats it
