Default turbo in the rain

Hey guys, i own a 91 toyota mr2 and i'm having trouble with the car when it rains. I'm new to this site but i've already noticed that many of the members are educated and well rounded, so i figured i'd ask for some help. A few nights ago I was driving from Phila to NYC in the rain and my car started acting funny. First it would hesitate and even with the pedal to the floor and then it would back fire. Shortly after it shut off. It would restart in about 15 minutes but after driving for 20 minutes the same thing would happen. My initial thought was that water got into the engine some how and maybe into the turbo. This doesn't happen when I drive regularly in the rain only if i'm driving fast and for long distances. Someone told me that turbo cars shouldn't be driven in the rain. How true is that and can someone shed some light on my situation. I would greatly appreciate it.

Yeah, they wouldn't bother putting out turbo cars if you couldn't drive them in the rain. You must have something else wrong and it just happened to show up when it was raining. Take it to a good mechanic and see what's wrong with it.

thanks for the help but it's the second time this has happened to me and it was also raining then. I guess it must be taking in water somewhere.

try shutting the hood and spraying it with a hose for a while and then seeing if you can spot a leak then, maybe you can just hot glue the leak yourself and solve the problem.

or the trunk, since it's an mr2. Which is which on those cars? is the hood always in front or is the hood always over the engine? that's kind of bothered me for a while.

Sounds like it's getting in the electrics somewhere. It won't be an actual mechanical problem.

Check fuse boxes, relay boxes, coil packs (engine bay electrics) etc to see if you can see any moisture anywhere. Sounds like it may be in a warm enough area that it dries out pretty quick.

Anyway, good luck!

Sounds like that may be it SevPP, I figured that water was getting in somewhere but just couldn't put my finger on it. I'll have to get a mechanic to check that out for me. And Souperduck, the hood is over the engine in the rear of the car. Thanks again.

if you hit a puddle or a patch of water on the highway, i would think it would splash up. how fast are you driving? but if not, its an electrical issue

Does your mr2 have a dizzy? I'm not sure how advanced the '91s were... if it does, make sure you carry a can of crc or dw40 with you and when it rain pull the dizzy off and give it a spray, then keep driving. Or lookinto making a shield to stop it getting splashed/dripped on.

The hose test as above it worth doing, maybe even put a blanket or sheet over the motor before doing it and then you can see exactly which parts of the bay are getting wet and then work out what's in those parts that can play up..

wow *wipes tear from eye* that's the nicest thing anyone on here's ever said to me!... you're not gay are you??

...only prob is that I am doubting a 91 mr2 still uses a points type ignition setup
