Default Turbo Fire

why is there sometimes fire coming out of the mufflers of high horsepower turbocharged cars???

it only seems to happen when they back of the throttle (shifts, slowing down from w.o.t)

i have a good, but basic understanding of how turbos work...but what is with the fire?

small excess gas that goes through the exhaust pipe and gets ignited

On a turbo car, when you let off the gas, the extra boost pressure is let off (through the BOV). Since this air is already measured, the computer adds the correct amout of fuel, but now the measured air has been released and the extra fuel does not burn. It then leaves the cylinder and into the hot exhaust where it is sometimes ignited by the hot piping. Mine does it all the time. Especially if I am going to pass someoneand I ride high in a gear and then dont pass them, and let off the gas without pressing the clutch. BBOOOOFFFF!!! fireball

You were right on though...

I just thought he might want to know why the extra gas gets through.

Yes this is one of the ways that you can get flames from your exhaust, however most turbo charged cars with loads of horsepower often use a MAP sensor which measures the amount of air after the BOV.the flames on these cars are often unavodable because you need loads of fuel to spool up the big turbos these cars often use.On rally cars the flames come from the anti lag system, which retards the ignition and dumps fuel into the exhaust manifold.BTW having a atmospheric dumpvalve(BOV) on a car with an airflow meter is not a performance upgrade unless you are running motec or other kind of fully mappable engine managment.

not recomended unless u want to replace ur engine every 2 months. some rally cars use it.

Not only high horse powerd cars.

It could something stupid as the Air/Fuel Ratio is messed up.

or raw fuel is dumped into the exaust, a Leaking exaust will draw in outside air and mix w/ the fuel and BOOM!

OK then i know what it is,in europe this is called antilag. It is quite hard on the turbo and creates very high exhaust tempratures.I explained the basic workings of this in my previous post.as a general rule most turbocharged rally cars use some kind of ALS(AntiLagSystem). It gets quite loud at times,a shotgun is kind of wimpy soundwise.

Like when you use an atmospheric dumpvalve on a car with an airflowmeter.
