why is there sometimes fire coming out of the mufflers of high horsepower turbocharged cars???
it only seems to happen when they back of the throttle (shifts, slowing down from w.o.t) i have a good, but basic understanding of how turbos work...but what is with the fire? |

On a turbo car, when you let off the gas, the extra boost pressure is let off (through the BOV). Since this air is already measured, the computer adds the correct amout of fuel, but now the measured air has been released and the extra fuel does not burn. It then leaves the cylinder and into the hot exhaust where it is sometimes ignited by the hot piping. Mine does it all the time. Especially if I am going to pass someoneand I ride high in a gear and then dont pass them, and let off the gas without pressing the clutch. BBOOOOFFFF!!! fireball

Not only high horse powerd cars. It could something stupid as the Air/Fuel Ratio is messed up. or raw fuel is dumped into the exaust, a Leaking exaust will draw in outside air and mix w/ the fuel and BOOM!

Like when you use an atmospheric dumpvalve on a car with an airflowmeter. Last edited by LIFTWAFFE PRODU; 03 Jul 2004 at 07:50 am. |
