Default LSD (not the drug)

Ok Limited slip differentials. I got the general idea of what they do and what not. But someone said that u need to overhaul it every once in a while if u use it for drifting. If thats the case because im lookin for another 240sx could u not buy one without a limited slip in it initally and install one aftermarket for relativley inexpensive?

Define inexpensive... An aftermarket unit will run you from $800-$2000 depending on what you get. You may also have to buy axle stubs for an LSD diff if yours is not already LSD. They are a little larger diameter and one is a little longer too. They are about $200 each from Nissan. You can get a good used JDM LSD diff for about $200-$400 plus shipping. Just make sure it has the right bolt pattern on the flanges (US 240's have 6 bolt, some JDM S13 and S14 and US J30 and US 300zx diffs are 5 bolt). You just need to change the fluid in it when you get it and change the fluid regularly if you drive the crap out of it. The fluid breaks down just like the oil in your motor.

You pretty much have to buy one without LSD. The only S13's with LSD are the ones with HICAS 4 wheel steering. You DO NOT want that if you are going to drift! Only a few S14 SE's had a LSD. It was a very rare option. If you can get your hands on a Canadian model, they have LSD. The best bet is to get the JDM LSD opr one from an Infiniti I30 (bolts right in) or one from a non turbo Z32 300zx (just need the 6 bolt axle stubs). I have one from an R34 Skyline GT that will bolt in as well. I am just looking for a deal on the 6 bolt axle stubs myself. They are $155 each at cost from Nissan. You can use any LSD from a Nissan R200 rear end as long as you have the right bolt pattern axle ends to put in it. You will just have to swap it into the 240's diff and have it set for lash and such.

In 98 the only 240's that had LSD were 5 lug (wheel lugs, not axle flange lugs) SE models, but less than half of those had LSD. You can pretty much give up on finding one with LSD. You will be lucky enough to find a 98 model in the first place. One of my good friends just had his 97 rearended and totaled. He has been looking for 4 months for a replacement. They are very hard to find in a 5 speed as well... Another thing you'll need for drifting. Your looking for a 98 model SE with LSD, a 5 speed and no HICAS. Now thats a rare car! Theres also no real way to tell if it has an LSD besides opening the diff. or getting it off the ground and spinning one tire by hand and see if the other spins the same. They came with a little orange sticker on the diff, but it often comes off. 240's will often spin out with both rear tires, even with no LSD, so that is not a good way to check. Good luck though.

Sorry Shaggy, the 240 has an independant rear and the ford solid axle wont fit
