I got a couple questions about LSDs as I have recently gotten into drifting. My car is stock, but it does have an LSD and it is an old car but nonetheless driftable. What do you think about drifting in stock cars?
Do you guys ever 'overhaul' your LSD? If so, what does it involves, and what is 'overhauling'. Sorry, Im not a techie, just picked this up from Drift Bible so I can become more litterate with cars .Second what is the difference between 1 way and 2 way differentials? Does it make a large difference for beginners? Appreciate the input, thx anyways. A|pine. |

I think as long as its a little damp out, and you can get the rear end around easily, go drifting in your stock car, I do.
And overhauling just means taking something apart, inspecting it, replacing parts if needed, and putting it back together. And maybe also referring to upgrading or changing gear ratios to change how the power is put to the wheels. I don't really know the diff. between 1 and 2 way LSD's, but my friend just got a 2 way for his and it's not really good for drifting. When he puts a full lock on the steering wheel and gives it some gas, it sounds like the gears are just eating themselves. We've checked with the company and that is how the diff. works, it's just a really harsh working LSD.

drifting in stock cars is where everybody should start if you put alot of money into a car with suspension and other mods then what happens if you screw up which i will almost gaurentee you will atleast once. plus with a stock car you will learn more about the physics of drifting and be able to drift pretty much anything. but If you drift a car built specifically for drifting then itll be pretty much the only car youll be able to drift in.
as for overhauling it pretty much means rebuilding something. lsd's have moving parts and with all moving parts comes wear and if you have an old one and you drive it hard then it will wear down. so replaceing lsd's every now and then isnt a bad idea. my advice would be to take it slow drifting is a sport of driving finess not droping 10k into your car. |

What type of car do you have? Is it a mechanical or a viscous LSD? If it is viscous and the fluid is not changed (it wears out) then it probably is barely an LSD by now. If you drift alot, you should change the LSD fluid (in a Viscous) every or oil change or two. When a wheel spins, the fluid heats in a microsecond and thickens, locking the diff. The more worn the fluid, the less it locks.
there are 1 way, 1.5 , and 2 way diffs. It has to do with how much lock up the unit has with leading and trailing throttle. |
