Default Grand National stuff

hey, I'm thinking about a Grand National being my next car. Does anyone know if any aftermarket companies make a manual transmission for them?

I'm thinking of an 87 to get, but all GN's that I've seen have had the 3sp auto tranny. I dont want a slapshift or anything, just a straight manual tranny.

thanks,

Chad

well first the tranny is a 4 speed auto tranny some with a lock up torque converter, i don't recall ever seeing an aftermarket company that makes a 5 speed for it but you can do the swap yourself.

a buddy has a monte carlo ss that he swaped everything from an iroc camaro into his monte and it works fine. you just need a doner car for all the parts for the swap.

thats the problem, you will need a bell housing. you need to get a BOP bell housing and the rest you can get from an iroc. thats the best thing about GM, almost everything is interchangeable. you need to get a bell housing that will fit the buick and the rest is childs play.

I used to have an 80 Buick Regal Sport. It had a carbuerated Turbo 3.8 and a 4 speed manual. It also had T-Tops, which supposedly wasn't an option in 80. dunno! It was a VERY RARE car though! I dont know what tranny it used. And I have never seen another one. It might be worth checking into for a bellhousing though.

First of all, they all had the automatic tranny with overdrive(4 speed). Second of all these turbo cars run much better with the automatic. It helps keep boost up between shifts. In 1989, they put the 3.8 Grand National engine in a few specail edition Firebirds, one of the concepts had a manual transmission and the performance numbers were terrible compared to that of the automatic.

If by any chance you still wanted to do this swap, you can get around the BOP(Buick, Olds, Pontiac) bellhousing problem with an adapter plate from TCI.
