all the individual throttle body applications that i have seen run with no air filter...when they show them, you can see the plates opening just like a carburetor....wont the absence of any air filter cause dirt and other fine particles to go into the combustion chamber? causing scratches and damage the internals?
i just want to know why normal throttle boddies use air filters while the individual throttle body applications dont use them... |

The picture that you saw is just for show. I thought that you meant like actual car running with-out airfilter on ITB.
I hardly seen any with out airfilters, maybe if its aftermarket. No matter what you will see air filter with all Jdm sport cars that have ITB ,also the reason why you probably dont know much about ITB it just you dont see ITB too often in USDM cars. The only reason why you would remove your air filter is for looks and really really wanting to gain the smallest performance for a short while. Last edited by aznflick; 20 May 2004 at 10:58 pm. |

they do run it without air filters.....
if any of you have wathced the Best motoring Int. with the supra vs. rx7, vs skyline vs. sylvia.......the other part of the video shows other tuner cars...one of them had ITBs....they did not put in a filter to run it. also remember the MTV thing with the Streed Racing??? the guy was running the ITBs...he was showing his engine before he was racing,....then he raced...without putting any filters on... |

Yes, they do run without air filters, but only in a pure racing setup. Alot of motorcycles on the street have no air filters either. With racing, the engine is torn down and rebuilt often enough to exclude the use of a power-robbing air filter.

actually air filters in some situations actually improve HP and Torque..
I know that my 280Z without an airfilter runs 3 hp less than with an air filter.

One of our turbo KA 240's wont run with no filter. Has something to do with the turbulance accross the MAF. It wont even idle without it. Unless you cup your hand in fron of the MAF just right. Its got one of those crappy oriface type MAFS, and the air has to flow just right over the little hole... Now back to the original topic, ITB!

Yes, but that would NEVER happen in a race car. The way your engine is tuned, it is not making peak hp--it is merely making a very useable and enjoyable powerband. Jon |
