I own a 98 chevy cavalier. Most of the time when I go to shift into 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th it is like i am locked out of that gear. 5th gear has no problem at all. When I finally get it to go into any of the other 4 gears there is a small crunching noise. I have no clue what the problem is.

Tubular GT40 intake, 24lb injectors, bigger MAF and TB. Roller rockers (1.6), under drive pulley kit. |

check the tranny fluid, clutch fluid, clutch line, clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder and see if your clutch is disengaging all the way... if any of these are not your problem then your synchros are f*cked

Hahaha...so true, Cavaliers (I'm a huge Chevy hater) are worthless. Also, my girlfriend posted that, hense the lack of all detail in the description, and the fact that it's not one of my cars. As a follow up, her mother brought it to the local Monro service center. Turns out 2nd was stripped, and somehow 5th was too...still trying to figure that out.
She's only had it for a couple thousand miles, so I'm going to blame it on the previous owner, and say I have a girlfriend who drives a 5 speed with some sort of proficiency. Though this leads to another techincal question: how do you get someone to realize that the throttle can be manipulated gradually during shifting, rather than jumping off it and then applying the clutch, creating an extremely jerky ride, which I'm sure is harder on the drive train.
