The car is not slow, the driver is. People running a cobb stage 2 on thier wrx's run faster times than that with only 285 hp. People have gotten as low as 13.1 with only exhaust and engine management.

Well when you get as much traction as an awd subaru, all that power is going to the ground and putting tons of stress on the drivetrain parts, tranny axles etc, and sometimes when you go to a track thats and hour away from home or so, you dont want to break one of those. It was probably his first time at the strip with the car so he didnt want to risk it.

Just about everything on the car is tip-top...except the gearbox. Alot of people have found themselves with a stripped 1st gear after doing too many "good" awd launches. And subaru of america will almost certainly deny your warranty if you come in with a broken tranny. It's not even up to the dealer, they have to take pictures of the broken tranny and send them to SOA, who will tell you that you abused it and they won't fix it, or if you have any modifications, they'll blame it on that. Yes that is against the law, but someone would have to take them to court over it. Many have tried. Nobody has the time or money to win a legal battle with SOA.

I had a 2002 wrx and I didn't find any of what you said to be true. In fact I think their warranty service is very good, especially when compared to Mitsubishi who will search the scca and other event listings in an attempt to void your warranty, whereas Subaru gives a one year membership with the SCCA when you buy the car.

If they did not have the procedures in place that they do you would pay a lot more for a wrx. Things work the way they do in order to protect themselves SOA, as well as you.

Yeah, they do give you that SCCA membership, and will STILL void your warranty the same way mitsu does. Warranty entrapment lol.

These issues don't exist for the STi, it has a different gearbox. The title of this thread is a bit misleading...there's no such thing as a USDM 2002 STi. There are plenty of '02 STi's in the world, but certainly no USDM ones. That was a wrx, maybe it has an engine swap but it's very unlikely. The cost of it just isn't worth it...you might as well buy an STi. And as for the whole class action suit thing, I think something started but never finished. Truthfully it's better that way. That's sorta what happened with the Galant VR4. Americans would mod the car seriously, expect the warranty to be upheld, and so we didn't get any evo's until now. Now the tranny thing with the wrx is similar. They will blame a stripped gear on any mod really, or abuse, etc. If they had to give everyone new transmissions they wouldn't be able to deliver the performance for the price, like he said^.

No, sorry bud but your wrong here. Subaru actually hosts auto-x events. Infact a member on Nasioc was at one of SOA's auto-x events and he asked what would happen if he broke a part. They told him it would be covered under warranty provided he wasn't excessively abusing the car, meaning race it, but don't go doing 7k launches and donuts for your buddies. Subaru is great about warranty work.

Actually he does have an engine swap. It is a version 7 STi swap. The car is very capable.

I don't blame SOA for being cautious about the wrx tranny one bit. A lot of young kids with little to no knowledge get behind the wheel and absolutely beat on these cars. Launching an all wheel drive car has to be done right or you will break something.
