in America, at least in the SCCA-regulated rallies, we get an Open Class, any and all modifications allowed. Up until this year, Subaru and Mitsubishi were running factory cars with over 450hp. However, since Mitsubishi is quickly going down the tubes, there are no factory teams this year, and this Canadian named Patrick Richard wins almost every race in a Group N WRX. but man, S1600 cars only? how lame is that.

I agree, it's very lame. But the FIA thinks it will make the rallyes more competitive. The S1600's like the Citröen C2 or the Renault Clio are good cars but, you don't get the same satisfaction of going to see a rally with wrc's sliding around and breaking stage records.. like on previous years.

couple things... was that a renault R5 (ie, le car) that came right after the 0 car on SS1?
also, i've gotta say Patrick Richard is a super nice guy. I got to talk with him for a while at the 2004 rally of the tall pines. (don't care for tom mcgeer so much though...) Subaru just recently pulled it's funding for Rally Sport Ontario, wether or not that affects how well funded Patrick Richard is remains to be seen, but with all racing, unless there are rules to cap spending, who ever has the most money tends to win. That being said, open classes are important, i think, for the development of the sport. (i'm in the process of building a group 2 car. money and sponsers are difficult, so it's nice to see a variety of cars and classes). |

That does suck i was born in madeira island so i remember seing those bad ass lancia delta's and escort cosworths back in the day. I was there in 2001 and watched the rally was lots of fun but not like it was in the early and mid 80's and 90's thats for sure.
