The fifteenth special stage of the 1986 ADAC-Rally Hessen took place on 31 May on roads formerly used for the Schottenring circuit near Schotten, north of Frankfurt, in Germany. At 20h34 the Ford RS 200 driven by former Swiss grand prix racer Marc Surer ran wide on a fast righthander. It spun ninety degrees on the grasy verges of the road and hit a tree broadside near the engine compartment at a speed estimated to be around 200 km/h. The car sheered this tree in half and continued to slide over the grass until it it a larger tree, also broadside, just behind its b-column. The Ford exploded in a great ball of fire and broke in two parts. Michel Wyder, Surer's co-driver, was killed instantly. Surer was ejected from the car and, with his overall in flames, managed to drag himself to a nearby creek where he put the fire down. He suffering multiple fractures, serious burns and other injuries which required a long and painful convalescence until a complete recovery.
