I've been looking into 240's more and more recently. My next car is going to be a manual transmission with a 5spd. Of course the cars I want are just unrealistic at this point really(various camaros and supras), but 240's dont look at that expensive and theres soo many engine options with them, its kinda ridiculous.

Just a shameless plug for nismoron.... I would listen to what he has to say, don't know him personally but from what I've seen him say, he knows his nissan stuff pretty well

When I saw the topic and it said 240, I automatically thought volvo... Because I have a volvo 240... oh well :P

Thanks for the plug

I have raced 240's for several years. I am also the VP of a Nissan Tuning Service and the local Nissan Club. We have about 10 240's and two 300Z's that are actively raced, in addition to many other members.

i dont know what fuel you americans are using.....but someone said easy to get 600hp out of a 25DEt...

my mate has an R33, really well known in aust., built up by a top workshop, bout $80,000 put into it (alot of susp/drift mods aswell) with the biggest turbo and a heap of shit into the 25DEt Neo, on bout 2.4bar boost it made 448rwkw, 601hp...but mind you that was with over 1000nm of torque

I said farly easy to get 600hp, NOT fairly cheap!!!

Is that US$ or AU$? there's a pretty big difference. Not trying to start a fight, but $80k? even in AU$ thats a LOT! I added up an RB26 N1 (most expensive block I could thing of) block and all high $ JDM forged internals and etc. and still cant come up with $80k? He must have had a shop doing the labor?

I figured with about $12000 you could be hammering down about 500+hp with a RB25. Not including supporting mods to the car (brakes/suspension). Just a quick calculation in my head. Might be forgetting some things.

Anyway, you wouldn't really want to drive around town very much in a 500+hp 240sx. We have a 300Z with about 550hp and we keep it tuned down to about 400hp for street use. (cough, cough) you know, going to the grocery store and stuff

lmao @ 80g's into the car?????? some1 wastes $$$ i bet 90% of that $$ was wasted on labor. learn to do your own engine swaps/work, its so simple to learn on a beater car by just taking the engine out and reinstalling it, the wiring is the most time consuming if you new at it. trust me bro i do all my own work , except for boring/machining stuff, you will save soooo much. you could deffinitly do the whole RB26dett swap with ecu n Rwd setup for under 10,000$$, maybe even under 7,000$ depending on the Engine price. gl with swaps be prepared to have alot of time, cause when you save on $$$, it will cost you in time

Admittedly, I could blow $80,000Au (thats about $63,00 US) on my car pretty quick! But I agree whaoleheartedly with twint88supra. I only have about 11 or 12 grand wrapped up in mine. The only thing I had anyone else do was the welding on my intercooler. We cant weld aluminum with our rig very well. I wanted it pretty! I cut it and modified the outlets., cut and fitted the pipes. All he had to do was set it on the table and weld it up. Everything else we do ourselves.

thats good to hear bro, i HATE hearing how people waste their $$$ cause they are lazy or stupid or both, yea it takes alot of practice to get used to welding aluminum, i probably woulda paid to have those welds too cause you dont wanna practice on your own car, lol
gl with your project

I've got the advantage of having a father that's a 20+yr ASE certified mechanic Helps out alot. On my humble volvo turbo project I think I've spent about $1,000 now. There's a list at the link of my sig. A few of the things are non-performance(like the tail lights, tacho replacement, foglights). But all of my hardware components were free.

I think alot of people pay others to do their work because they just don't have access to facilities. And it's hard to just get started when you have a lack of experience. I'm learning alot now because I'm "modifying" my "sweet ride" ( )...

BigDon: Dude, why would you tune your mom's truck? That's got ricer/lamer written alll over it. Work on your 240... after a while it could be a nice beast of a car. And if you leave your exteriror/rims stock, it'd be a sleeper as well. Alot of poeple wouldn't expect 300+hp out of a car like that.

Honestly a 25 is a bang for the buck since most of the 20 and 25's parts are interchangeable (minus injectors and headgaskets) and you have more displacement. Not to mention the prices for parts are pretty much the same and the 25 is easier to find parts for. Cams are the same, intake and exhaust manifold are the same flange, RB clutches are interchangeable just need a different throw out bearing for the 26's. If you are using the car for drag rb is the way to go but drift is sr for balancing issues. Here is a company that did a 26 into a kouki 14 and it took a lot of work to get it in. Notice how little room there is from the radiator to the engine. It was shoe horned in the bay.

shouldnt be a reason not to do you own work, any1 can get experience you just actually have to read and be hands -on. plus no facility should ever be an excuse , im out back in the freezing cold laying on a couple pieces of half inch plywood doing my engine work without gloves, lol plus we jacked my boys car up before in a parking lot and took his engine and tranny home to his apt and fixed it. so as long as you have basic tool set and a couple jacks, its all gravy, mind im only 25 and i did my first swap @ 19, so im not some old gearmonkey preaching the gospel. im just saying its alot less scary to do a swap once you start getting in to it.

I don't have any facilities except my drive way and my $50 socket set. and a few other hand tools. I dont have a air compressor or any air tools. Hell, until a year and a half ago, I didn't even have a driveway. Didn't keep me from working on my own car though!

Oh, and you learn by doing! and F ing it up!

Why should he do a motor swap?

You can get 450HP just fine from a Turbo KA. Or a CA18DET, which is a lot cheaper than an RB20DET.
