cant find any house here in cali for 200k even in the ghetto....so id pick car

Right now at this point in my life i would have to go for a house and maybe use the left overs on a cheapish car.

If its an "either a or b", situation, the car should always be secondary to a home.

Generally speaking, if you are renting right now (i.e. paying someone else's mortgage) go with the house and start investing in yourself. If you are living with your parents right now, this is the perfect time to save up b/c it will take your a lonnnnng time to save up your downpayment (its 25% here in canada, less in the US) if you move out and are paying for rent + life expenses. Getting in early and building up equity sooner rather than later will have a huge impact on your financial quality of life down the road.

I went with cheap car and then a house last year. However, I do wonder sometimes about what life would be like if I had decided to stay home with my parents and bought a new z06 or viper instead....

screw the house, i'd get a moderate priced car and dump the rest into it.

Really tho, I'd pay off my college first, can that be a choice? thats 100k right there.

hell, the colleges here in NC are some of the most expensive. NC state, Duke, UNC, Wake forest.........lady I know was paying $45,000 per year to go to Duke. She still has 3 yrs to go. That's 180K for a 4 year degree.

law school for me is 125k, on top of that 4 years for the undergrade is 10k a year

scratch that...i would put all the money as a downpayment on a 500k+ house....still would be like 1-2k a month tho

300K borrowed for 30 years @ 6.6% = 1915.98 a month.

However if you could settle for a 400K house then your payments would only be around 1200 a month.

And a 300k house would only cost 638.66 a month. And around here 300K house are pretty nice.

25k at Illinois for college, plus master's degree on top of that could be anywhere from 25-100K more.
