Its not the government's job to keep people safe from their own stupidity. If it was, the rule of law would be 1000 times more suffocating than it already is.

It's not the goverment's job to keep people safe from their own stupidity (they try to anyway with helmet laws, seatbelt laws and such), but in this case, they're protecting people from other people's stupidity, which is fine.
If the people texting were the only ones ever involved in the accidents and no one else got hurt, that would be fine. It would just be natural selection - thinning out the gene pool. Unfortunately, as in this case, and in so many others, other people die or are injured for life because of one person's stupidity.

And seriously, what could possibly be soooooo important that it couldnt wait five minutes until you reach your destination.

If the government were truly serious about protecting people, they'd have harder driving tests. If they create such a law, it will be paper-thin, and only so they can say they did something, and get re-elected.

I don't think they really specify texting or calling...
It's like a $200+ ticket I heard too.

I never use my cell phone at all while I'm driving, except for when I'm using my phone to play my mp3 music off of it to my car radio. (I've gotten pulled over for that too. & it was hard to explain my way out of a ticket here, even for that... had to show cop he didn't believe me.)

It's just stupid to text while you drive! Don't try saying I only do short messages... that's like saying, "I only drive with my eyes closed for 5-25 seconds." Not very intelligent is it?
Those of you who text and drive: I don't care if you disregard your own safety, but what pisses me off, is when someone else dies because of you!

You take your eyes off the immediate road ahead ALL THE TIME. The key is to minimize those times. Collisions can happen during any one of those, but you don't see laws against adjusting the air, your radio, or distracting road advertising.
