Go to any of the major tuning companies web sites and you´ll find a History section. The one I remember right now are: -Hamman -AC Schnitzer -Blitz -HKS -Brabus -Carlsson -Techart etc, google these names and you´ll find the links cuz most of them are .de or .co.jp etc Major achievements of the history in terms of performance is a bit more dificult, but stuff like the Quattro (its not the first 4wd road car, that was the Jensen FF, check it out) ABS, first mid engine racer (Cooper F1) use of turbos (first aplications were on trucks way back to the 1930´s, I think) and superchargers, and early years of tuning (Hot-Rods and stuff, dont think its all Japanese) If you are gonna talk about drifting I´m gonna give you a heads up: Drifting was POPULARIZED (or how the Fuçk you spell it) in Japan, but not invented there. Drifting always existed since the early days of motorsports, when was used crossply tyres that basicly have no traction. I know of guys drifting pre-WW2 3 wheel Morgans in Silverstone back in the 1950´s. If you see old footage of GT racing in late 50´s early 60´s you just see E-types and GTOs sideways around corners, so dont fall for the usual mistake of saying that drifting is something new and innovative.

i think you may need to be more specific on your reasearch... maybe you should do a history on a car company such as honda, toyota or nissan. Possibly the evolution of forced induction. or the popularity of Illegal street racing, drifting, or GT racing.
your topic may be to broad is what i am trying to say to you. that's my two cents
