ok i understand that but if i went to college i want to major in something that i love (cars) and understand. So what kind of automotive majors are there? (other than a mechanic) ive been thinking about racing. ex. how would i go about becoming forumla one driver or a drifting pro, something like that.
i want to know what it takes to be a pro driver like alex pheiffer (drifting for rsr in his s2000). i know this is broad but it really might help me life if you guys could recommend something. thanks

That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan; retails for about one hundred nine, ninety-five. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel, and a hair trigger. That's right, shop smart, shop S-Mart! |

Most of those drivers just didnt get to jump into racing, they started off in go karts or small local racing like SCCA, Circle Track, etc etc.

i agree with what ur sayin NX, but unless you know some1 within the organization, your not gonna be able to get a job easily without a degree. You ever see the movie ****tail with Tom Cruise? Hes tryin to find a job and everyplace he applies to, they turn him down and say they require a college degree.
S2k you should would you ever consider getting into the field of automotive achitectural design. Do you know how much those guys make, plus they get to work with some of the most advanced computers in the world. Last edited by 302stangGT; 23 Feb 2006 at 07:50 am. |

Ill say 5-6 out of 10 jobs people know someone inside the organization. What I meant was that there are labor jobs out there that you can make more money then people with degree's. Let me give you an example I have a friend that drives a coal truck all day with no degree and makes more money then me, and Im a Engineer. I have another friend that works at a powerplant doing nothing but pushing a button with a degree (that he doesnt use) and makes more then me .His degree had nothing to do with his current job, all they wanted was a high school diploma and knowledge of basic electricity. You have to look at the careers that last and with good pay. The federal costs of living across the states raises over 2% every year. Not saying a degree isnt benefical, just that if you go for a degree make sure thats the major and career you want to get into too.

But racing cars is alot more dificult. You dont only need talent, but you need some one to give you a chance, and thats where the problems start. I say think very well what you want to do, what you can do, and all your options. There upsides and downsides. What you decide now is gonna set your life for the next years. Think very well all the steps you make. Take chances, but with calculated risks What ever you choose, your gonna be good:thumb:

thanks alot guys, your very helpful. any other tips are always appreciated.
Now, im trying to figure out what kind of jobs there are in the car business. can someone list a few? im not talking mechanics here. i want something like working for Car and Driver magazine. Those guys make hundreds of thousands of dollars to drive cars. Im not saying that i want that job but im looking for something like that. Possibly when i turn 18 i will try to get a job at the Ford dealer down the street cause i know a guy there.

you wanna get into drifitng? I personally believe drifitng should be a hobby, even for the pros, most of them have some kind of profesion plus they drift. If you wanna get into drifitng, it's simple, fill an aplication for a Formula D "driver search" and you better be fuk!ng skilled cuz there's like 50 competitors and only like 3 of them are picked, if you fuk up your car while drifting, which usually noobs do, there ain't gonna be promoters to pay it for u, unless you become a ken gushi or a rhis millen
I also want to some day become a drifter or some kind of racer, but you know what... I'm gonna have to wait a few years cuz first I'm going thru my engineering education. At the end it will be all worth it :thumb: Quote:
or if you're all about mechanical parts like engines and stuff you can study at UTI (www.uti.edu , but you better be rich to pay for it, if you get a certificate there you go straight into jaguar, BMW, mercedes, what have u :thumb: Last edited by r34drifter; 23 Feb 2006 at 03:49 pm. |

my dad only went to 6th grade and now hes an owner of a million dollar construction company so it is possible to get somewhere w/o a college degree but now its a little harder. as for the racing career thing its pretty much close to impossible to be a f1 driver. you have to pretty much be practicing carting in the womb. maybe at best a pro touring car driver but even then that would be hard to get into. my advice would be to hit the road course..... alot! maybe youll catch some team managers eye or somethin.
