Touring/Raly autos

My friend and I have been really getting serious about the whole rally scene (Gumball/Cannonball/Bullrun kind of races). Ive been re-evaluating my car choices, and I know Ive said a lot, but since the Insurance company shot down my Lotus clone project, Ive been throwing ideas around in my head. I don't know what I want to do, but for some reason, the whole touring car idea has really struck accord with me, its practical (4 door sport sedan), sporty, and insurance *hopefully* wont rape me again. Now here are some of my ideas, I'm trying to brainstorm and I coming to you guys for some ideas/suggestions/advice.

As far as the Touring cars go:
Audi-(A4/A6/A8)
Mercedes- (190E)
Infiniti- (Q45)
BMW's- (Don't know where to start)

Now here is the criteria:
I'd like to do something for $5,500

Mercedes 190E 2.3 amg and convert it to evo 2

I can only find like 3 190E 2.3's. None of them particularly catch my eye. It seems that I can buy a nice sport sedan from 88-95.

go for a bimmer, theres alot more potencial and I think there might be more available performance material and they are more satisfaying to drive then the rest.

Ive been looking all over, and the cost is going to be too great to do what I want. The price of buying the car, and maintaining it I think is going to be too much for me right now. And in light of finding out that the gumball now costs $120,000 to enter, there isnt much sense in buying a car for an event I cant afford.
