I believe it would be a flywheel explosion. The cast iron flywheel flies appart at high revs ,sending big chunks of it and the clutch through the bellhousing, engine bay sheet metal ,hood, exhaust system, other engine hardware and wiring, the fire is usually due to severed fuel lines.. In other words, a total ****ing wreak...

Coulda been the front cover too. I've seen a couple crack and blow the hood open like that. Really nice sound.

I'm 99% sure this was a flywheel explosion (read somewhere) It certainly looks to be a flywheel gone bad to me! I believe the car was from NZ?

I've seen the longer version of this, it goes for something like 7 minutes of constant thrashing. After he blows it up, he gets out and bows. To me it looked like he was trying to kill it.

I have actually heard a story from a guy David Broadhurst, here is Sydneys west.He owned BRE rotary engineering at windsor, and raced speedway in a High compression 10A PP rotary powered Midget sprintcar.I actually saw the casting plates he made to pour the mouldings to bolt into the combustion chamber recess in the faces of the rotor, for raised compression. He said once the throttle stuck wide open and the PP free reved to god knows how many RPM . The rotor housing split open apparently, and a rotor landed in the infield.!!! This was a very Extreme race engine though and would never happen on any street engine. So i wouldnt say it was not possible, but in the case of that green RX7, definatly not.
