I never rated the Miata/MX5 at all until recently. A mate just sold his 11 second RX7 and bought a 2000ish MX5. He brought it out to a track day and it was so much fun. Slow and underpowered but really nice, fun handling. There is a reason they are so popular. While the RX7 (s3 -'85) was good it was a piece of crap handling wise the MX5. And the MX5's are pretty much bulletproof mechanically. If I was looking to buy one I would be looking for a '02 MX5 SP. An Aussie developed turbo version.
Another company in Aus was doing a rotary version and a Lexus v8 version- na and supercharged. Called the Bullet Roadster. Very impressive cars!
