The only thing making that race close was the traffic and lack of good places to pass. The viper was clearly more powerful, and at least equal if not better in the turns.

Agreed. It looked like a real race, not just a driving event, so they might have been in the same class, so he was fighting for his position. He slammed the door shut a few times, but the Viper never really pushed the issue.

It looked like race, not just an open course day. So he can pass however he deems necessary. When racing, you have to find a way to pass, not hope the guy in front lets you by. Normally you get that chance when the guy in front makes a mistake. Didn't happen, so he couldn't pass. Notice the GT3 was geared for more top end? See how it was faster than the Viper down the long straight. That could have been why the Viper pulled it on the slower sections.
