i like kunts idea a used e36 m3 is an awesome car and mods arent as expensive as you think they look nice and they are pretty quick. and gettin a f-body aint a bad idea either get a ss or a ws6 tho. cobra would be a bad car to think about too

Id vote against the E36 given his needs and what he wants to do with the car. They are good handling cars, and fairly quick, but I think the big strike against it for a young guy new to cars is cost.

The wholesale price of a e36 m3 is between $17-20k for a 10 yr old car with probably 100k+ miles on the clock. Nevermind the cost of modding, think about the maintenance just to get it back to stock performance. While not an outright unreliable car, there are certain common things that need replacement at around the 40k mile mark like shocks, rear strut mounts, water pump (back when they used plastic impeller) etc. These parts, and the labour at bmw specialist shops, are not cheap by japanese/american car standards.

A lot of uncertainties exist as to whether the previous owner kept up with all of this stuff and it could end up being a money pit that has limited potential unless you build a motor and put a blower on it (price out the cost of that and you are looking at almost the price of the car itself) ... and im going to go out on a limb here, but I dont think that is in his budget.

Bang for the buck, I dont think there is a rival to the SRT-4. Not everyone can live with the looks or the image... but its not like the guy is going to be taking clients out to meetings or his wife to the opera so its less of a concern.

SRT 4 neon. Probably the only FWD i would own. cheap/quick off the showroom floor and has plenty of aftermarket. Similar to the Mustang 5.0L when it came out.

yea but i most of the guys i cruise with are agaisnt srt-4's with a passion and ive kinda been brought up that way also me nieghboor has had two and both have been pretty un reliable he says its usually small things but its alot of small things plus im lookin for a little more quility interior wise... my friends have both looked like there out of a regular neon... but dude they are way fast for what they are i might consider one i wouldnt have any friends anymore lol but meh i can always make new ones

Yah.. 11K for the first year E36 which is now pushing 16 years old that probably had the crap kicked out of it and was bought at the auction!!

$17-20k is for an 1999 M3 with 1-2 owners, good condition, low mileage, no accidents and full service history (i.e. the kind you would actually want to own and wont sink a lot of money into just on maintenance to get it sorted back up to spec.
