Default What you think would be best...

i'm new here, and got a few questions

i drive a '92 Honda Civic LX 1.5lr, and its in pretty good shape for being how old it is, some minor body work to be done, but thats not important right now

My Civic has been the best car i've owned now, and i love it to death, grown attached to it , as i'm sure most of you have done the same to your own car, and i want to keep it running for as long as possible. My idea is to replace the majority of stock parts ( overtime that is ) with aftermarket parts, not nothing to make this fly, but maybe make it a little more fun to drive, maybe give it a little more power than it has now, but nothing crazy

my question to you guys is this, should i start now while everything runs well and start replacing parts, or as problems arise, should i replace the bad part with a new part?

if i should start before things start going wrong, where should i begin, and can aftermarket parts be bought from a shop, or are the majority online? i found Honda Civic Parts Specialists and thought they looked legit, hearing that there are alot of "mimic" out there

any help you guys could give would be much appreciated

If something is wrong now that you would only end up swapping out with an aftermarket piece do it now instead of later.

the thing is though, nothing is wrong now, that i'm aware of that is, so i wasnt sure what would be the best thing to start with on an all stock car

IMO i wouldnt mod is power wise maybe lower it on coil overs to make it fun in some turns..unless u are going to do a engine swap itsnot really going to be worth spnding money onit. do a swap or buy a faster car..

Yeah, you really need to decide what you want it to be in the end. If you are going to keep it for a really long time and don't need anything with more power throw on a good suspension and sway bars and do some minor things to the engine. Otherwise save your money for either a swap or a new car.

I have a 1991 civic hatch as a daily driver and that is all I would ever do to it is daily drive it. Spending your money on go fast goodies will just make you kick yourself in the near future. Save it as a daily driver and make it comfortable to drive rather than quick. If you are an import guy, save for a newer SI or something comparable.

^ if that's his cup of tea, good for him. I'm just saying that it's not really worth dumping a lot of cash into an older import like that.

Drive it as is put as little into it as possible. Save your money, go to school invest your money in your education so you can have a better job and make more money or buy a business. Then buy a house after you own a house buy a car that fits your budget....do not lease a car just to have a more expensive car, buy it and don't lease it, buy what you can afford! Invest smart...cars are are only fun for the first week of owning it then its over and you still have the payment....Save the earth ride a bike....2007 Schwinn Old School $49.95

If I'm on a beer drinking forum and a person tells me they have a problem drinking and he cashes his pay check at the local pub...I would tell him to STOP drinking and get help regardless of the forum. To waste money on a 1990 transportation car is LUDICRISS when he is strapped for cash!

hey i live in the 90's my cars are from the 90'S i dont even consider anything newer as its all cheaper, i just love older standarts of quality and make.

As for the civic. If you want to keep it for the longest time, you have to set yourself a goal as of what you want from this car BUT

for starters, inspect your car thouroughly in order to know if it will hold with time and constant driving. Check the floors, check the frame, make sure nothing is shot. If you want some more power, the cheapest thing to do would either be an engine swap or turboing it at low pressures in order to keep the internals stock. But youre the boss no one will tell you what you want from a car. And dont sink money into something you will not keep for the longest time as you will never be able to resell your money.

Most people think im crazy for sinking money into my old volvo's but i really do plan on keeping them for the longest time, as i know its my ride that suits me best and parts are cheap, upgrades are easy (same goes for honda's). Just set your goal, and inspect your car, if you are not sure of what to check, bring it to a garage for a thourough inspection

Cheers *****es!

i do appreciate all the comments guys, it helps out alot

just like Marek and his volvo, the car does suit me well and so i want to keep it as long as i can, just was looking to make it more fun to drive, while keeping it in healthy condition

but as i said, i dont need this car to beat anyone, stock its only around 102hp, its pretty slow, but could be worse, the only thing i am really wanting to do to this car is to keep it running and maybe make it a little faster

which brings me to my first question, would it be worth it to replace some small engine parts with aftermarket, stuff that really isn't that expensive, but keeping some of the major stuff stock? would a stock engine be comfortable with aftermarket parts? i never have looked into the world of aftermarket parts deeply, so i wasn't sure if it all would be compatable

the way i looked at it when i started to first get interested is by my best knowledge, computers. You can't put a PCI-E 8800GTS onto a AGP motherboard, that doesn't work, so seeing as you upgraded to a PCI-E slot card, you also needed to upgrade the motherboard otherwise it wouldn't fit. Does that make sense in reference to cars?

Not really lol, as after market parts are designed specifically to a vehicule. You shouldnt have any problems changing the starter, resistor pack, any corroded wiring, water pump whatever you see you can change. And After Market to me is just getting the same part but cheaper and without the company stamp on it.

but trust me, get your car properly inspected before you get into this.
If everything is nice and you want to keep it that way, i say go for it, specially if the parts are cheap. But you cant establish that until you know whats wrong with the car (trust me, there is ALWAYS something wrong or that can go wrong) and its always better to be safe than sorry. A 100$ After Market water pump is alot cheaper than a 200$ towing when you are 500km's away from home.
