Competition among car owners is natural b/c like everything in this world, where you stand is all relative to those around you. If I have a car that goes 100mph, is that fast? Depends on the context: If you are talking about back in the day when everyone could only go 80 mph, then this is fast. Now it means nothing b/c even a hyundai accent can do that. So people constantly compare what they have with everyone else. The natural extension of that is rivalry and bigging up what they have b/c nobody wants to be on the bottom rung of the ladder. Its all human nature.

This is not an attempt at a diss (seriously), but perhaps the reason why you feel that rivalries are unwarranted is b/c you have "no skin in the game". If you go to any computer forum, im sure there are ppl who are argue until they are blue in the face about intel vs amd chips... I dont care about which is better b/c Im not a techie an involved in overclocking etc.
