Is it ugly? Heck yah... but is it rice? Thats a different question. To most ppl, rice means non-functional parts. That spoiler IS functional - pure function over form. It was one of the first cars to use computer aided aerodynamic design. You realize that the superbird had a drag coefficient of .28 (better than 90% of all sports cars today), and was the first in nascar to lap at an AVERAGE speed of 200mph. It was so functional that any car that had that wing had their engines restricted to reduce top speeds.
That ugly "rice" car is pretty sought after in the muscle car world (I dont like it myself) and is worth more than most ferrari's. |

Its b/c back in the day, when NASCAR used real production cars to race with instead of purpose built, tube frame cars, they had to work within the compromises of a car that wasnt intended to go 200 mph. The spoiler is that high b/c that is what works. The spoilers you see on those civics dont do crap.
If you want to see a REALLY big spoiler, look up the "Chapparel" wing car Image:Chaparral 2F - Mike Spence - 1967.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It got banned b/c it was too fast. Sometimes what works and what is pleasing to the eye are two different things. |

it's ok that you're dumb, UKunt. I forgive you. Race cars and race drivers could care less about how thier car looks if something added to it makes it faster however you fail to grasp this concept. For nascar, a manufacturer has to make a certain number of a the car model they want to race. Back then, nascar was still about mostly stock bodied production cars with modded motors. Now if the superbird back then could do 200mph average lap times imagine what kind of laps today's cars could do if it was still like it was back in the day. Makes ya think.
(sry for calling you dumb. perhaps uneducated would've been better) |

haha yes uneducated about american cars. them cars a prime example why i dont like any classic american cars.i didnt think it was just there for show.i dont think american designers are that stupid.
so the cars can do 200mph stock. or is that a full tuned one? 200mph on a oval track . wow im amazed how can it be possible with all the tricky corners. gee wizzz |

Its not fully tuned - its tuned within the rules of that particular class of racing, not a balls out, anything goes effort. You dismiss this as if its an easy feat. 200 mph average record stood for 13 years before it fell. Even today, after 40 years of advancements, how many production based tuner cars can hit 200 mph, let alone sustain it on average for a lap (you realize that even with banked corners, you have to slow down for them, right? you think its just a matter of matting the gas pedal and yanking the wheel left? lol.... Im not saying oval racing is the epitome of motorsports, but it seems like everyone with no appreciation for motorsports thinks they are capable of jumping into a stock car and crank out fast laps.. there is reason why those guys get paid millions of dollars a year for what they do and you and i just push pens for a living. well im not saying its hard.and not that easy ether. feck knows why they are paid so much. due to rednecks watching and 100k ppl turnign up to watch it.?who knows.ive never been a fan of it really or know feck all about it.i just see it as a pretty easy motor sport to all the other ones out there skill wise.
what kind of power were these cars kicking out back then in nascar.500-600bhp? |

The cars that the wife and I drove at the Marlboro school of racing were the Trans Am series cars, No, not the car the pontiac t/a, but the race series. Ours was a shell of a car that was stretched out and still resembled a dodge intrepid only it was a fiberglass shell, tube frame, 1 seat, 6 gauges, some switches and a shiter....oh...and 1 mirror. They are almost the same as a NASCAR and the power the oneswe drove put out 700bhp. Very very fun and loud when driving. We were limited to only like 130-140 mph, but when we got the ride w/ the intructor at the end, we were clocked at 185 mph. I wasn't driving so I can't claim that was "the fastest I ever drove". It was a blast to drive and you really have to fight the damn car to make all those left turns LOL. It's a damn work-out to drive that car, but well worth it IMO.

I agree with you... easier form of motorsport, but still doesnt make it easy...
The difference between a good driver and a great driver on an oval is that the great driver doesnt need as much downforce in the corners and therefore, gets that extra mph to consistently be faster than the other drivers. they had about 550 hp. Quote:
