i think life in jail untill death would be good anuff.IMO.but if it has to happen.they do need to be 100% sure it is the person. with DNA as proof, as was said before.

David Milgaard is a cdn who spent something like 20 years in jail for a murder he didnt commit and was only released recently. What would happen if he was executed? To those that support the concept of an eye for an eye, what do you do at that point? Execute the judge, prosecutor and jury that sentenced an innocent man to die?
sure you can't 100% sure........ 20 years ago, but the process today is 1000 times better. 20 years ago. you look like you did something, your guilty, today,..... you had a hotdog before you raped and murdered her......... you should of said no to the onions on that dog sir, take straight to the gallows.
public hangings, rope is cheap and so is wood, no messy head shot to clean up also. forget life sentences, end it right there.

Yes. Singapore has strict punishment for crimes. Once you are judged in Singapore, they dont care what nationality you are to receive the punishment.

Death Penalty is ok but the accuse must really deserve that.
It is really sad if the victim is being framed.

And Im sure that in the 60's, their forensics and technology were 1000 times better than their predecessors from the 40's and they thought their process couldnt get much better. The technology may be "1000x" better today, but the fallible part of the process has always been the people. Remember, when you go through the legal system, its not like all evidence is fed into some neuro-black box looks at the evidence and objectively decides an outcome. There are so many actors involved in the process, each with their own unique flaws and biases.

In short, there is no such thing as 100%.. and you cant undue a death sentence. Think about that when suggesting that executing ppl is the answer.

This is a tough 1. In certain cases I'm all for it, like when you have some1 thats just truly a self admitted murderer, rapist monster etc. Other than that I don't think it should be used because theres too many things that can go wrong (racism, biased opinions etc). I don't know how prosecutors, judges and jury members can sleep at night or go on living knowing in some cases that they killed an innocent person

good point, but what about all of the people who shot and killed someone but got off scott free due to some mess up within the system?(im saying this with physical proof) what about thier famlies? 2 people were there and only one can tell you what happened. It seems to me that the victims family is along for the ride and have no say what so ever as far as convitction or what they even think of the entire thing.

on top of that, this discusting thing that we call a judicial system is full of flaws, problems, and illeterate, dumb people running the show.
so a person gets picked for jury dutiy, so what, like they give a rats ass about the victim and his or her family. all they care about is getting home and going about with thier daily lives.

i guess ill say it now, if you murdred/manshaughter/or what ever else to kill a person you yourself should be punnished in the same way (if not more horrible) then the person/persons you killed.

Pedophiles and shit like that should be stoned to death on national tv.
People who plan to kill should get it, otherwise just let them spend some time in prison or whatever is suitable.

So we should have our tax money going to keep these guys alive? Some of them having it better than people who aren't in jail.

I 100% support the death penalty.

I just read an article in The Economist (Sept edition), and interestingly, it costs more to put someone to death than to keep them in prison for the rest of their lives.

It takes $2M usd per capital case (all in cost incl trial, appeals, etc), compared to $19k a year to incarcerate an inmate*. Keep in mind that 80% of inmates work to offset the costs of their incarceration so the true cost is actually lower. Ignoring the time value of money, you'd have to keep an inmate behind bars for 105 years before life in prison cost more than putting him/her to death.

*Statistics in Brief - Inmate Cost Per Day Department of Corrections - Florida.

Some other recent news.

Truscott acquitted

"Published: Wednesday, August 29, 2007
Steven Truscott, sentenced at age 14 to hang for a murder he has always claimed he did not commit, has been acquitted of the 1959 killing of Lynne Harper."

He's lucky he was put to jail instead of executed immediately....

reguardless of the amount of money it cost to do it, it still should be done. i guess you have to live through it to really understand what happens.
