Pontiac G8 Could Live On After All, Thanks to the Police

Apr 29th, 2009 by Ross Edwards

All this week we’ve been lamenting the demise of Pontiac, mostly the Solstice and G8, which GM has no plans to bring over to one of its other brands. The Solstice has lead a long life, and it’s due for a refresh before 2010 anyway, so we’re not too upset about that. What really chokes us up is the loss of the G8, we love the idea of a 400 hp, rear drive V8 that can bring four friends along for the ride. It’s sad that one of the best cars made by GM right now will be a victim of GM’s terrible mismanagement and dilution of the Pontiac name (G3? G5? Sunfire? Come on.).

Sunfires can’t do this.

It looks like the fate of the Pontiac G8 isn’t sealed after all. Australian Web Site GoAuto reports that a deal is in the works between Aussie automaker Holden, which manufactures the Commodore on which the G8 is based, and a group lead by the Los Angeles Police, to import police cars based on the Commodore/G8. The cars would wear the Chevrolet nameplate and would be built to police specs. This opens up the possibility of a civilian version being made available, and the G8 living on as a Chevy.
More.
I don't know why the hell the Crown Vic still sells 60k cars each year to police when it's completely outclassed by the Charger. It has to be because the mechanics already know the Crown Vic and are too lazy top learn how to fix the Chargers.

Somewhat good news I guess. That G8 makes a much better police cruiser/ pursuit car than the charger R/T does in many different ways.

very nice, i always liked the G8

i think crown vics are used still because i think they are cheaper, most stations already have a lot of them and it would be too costly to replace every vic with a charger

very cool, GM already has a Chevy model of the car so they don't really have to put money into it to rebadge it.

wrong !!!

I have a state trooper that lives down the street from me, he is not brand bias at all and he says they are just as slow as the crown vics and they cant handle for shit. He says they have a lame as top speed and crappy gearing.

He had said a long time ago that they needed to have the new impala SS or the G8's. He used to drive the camaro pursuit car, he said that they was no room at all for detained people and would have to call a back up car to pick them up, but he said they was no other mass used police interceptor faster than the 1LE Z/28's they used. He said he had it pegged at 160 and it was still pulling.

It's alive in Australia as the Holden Commodore too, but in America they said earlier this week it wouldn't be rebadged as a Chevy.

What's important is that the Commodore will still be sold in America, so there will be interesting cars to buy.

Crown Vics are a proven cop car. Chargers are new, and have growing pains.

Some officer issues involve the limited visibility compared to the crown vic. The Chargers also go through brakes much quicker than the Fords.

As much as we are car guys, there are many higher priorities a cop has for his "car needs" than power and handling.

Which is why they've come up with this Police Car for Police | Carbon Motors Corporation but a purposely designed police version of the Commodore/G8 might be some real competition for it, and it could have a much lower cost to repair, being a GM.

I love some of the features they have, like the suicide rear doors and the reversed seatbelts clipped to the cage. That would make buckling in a suspect much easier. With standard belts, you have to reach across the prisoner to buckle them in, leaving you vulnerable to attack, namely biting.
