The on-off saga of the launch of Honda’s all new supercar took another twist last week when CEO Takeo Fukui announced that Honda was putting back the launch of its Acura brand in Japan – and that the NSX replacement, which will be badged an Acura this time round, won’t be launched at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.

Honda will not say when the new NSX will appear, but Acura’s launch in Japan will now not happen until 2010 at the earliest. It is likely that Honda would want to launch the NSX at its home show in Tokyo, and as there’s no Tokyo show that year, the real launch date could be as late as October 2011.

Fukui cited concerns over the suitability of the Japanese market for the Acura brand as the reason for the postponement. According to a Honda spokesperson, it has nothing to do with the car not being ready for the show; indeed, Autocar has already published pictures and video of the car, disguised as an S2000, testing at the Nurburgring (see links below).

Japanese show-goers will have to make do with the global debuts of the Lexus LFA and Nissan GTR supercars then. Oh well.

Fukui Tells Honda R&D: NSX Must be Faster Around the Nurburgring Than the GT-R

NÜRBURG, Germany — The latest prototype of the 2011 Acura NSX has hit the Nürburgring, and according to our sources in Japan, it has a very specific goal. We're told that Takeo Fukui, CEO of Honda, has tasked his R&D team with building an NSX that's faster around the Nürburgring than both the Nissan GT-R and the upcoming Lexus LF-A.

It's a tall order, and one that Honda hopes it can achieve through the use of a 5.5-liter V10 expected to make 550 horses, with a torque peak expected to top 420 pound-feet. The engine is essentially a slightly larger version of the V8 that Honda will use for the next-generation, rear-wheel-drive RL sedan, and it will use cylinder deactivation under light loads for maximum efficiency. Additional gains will come from the use of an eight-speed, paddle-shifted automatic.

Getting the power to the ground will be a modified version of Honda's Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive (SH-AWD) system. Packaging could be tight, however, as this NSX will place its V10 up front. A combination of steel and aluminum will be used for the chassis that will form the basis of this 2+2 sports car.

What this means to you: The Acura NSX is less than two years away, and it's aiming to reclaim its title as Japan's ultimate supercar.

Well, they will get some props if they manage to actually be faster than the gt-r. However with the extra couple years they should be able to do it.

haha. sorry, couldnt resist. Anyhow, Acura's spokesperson said they are positioning this car directly at Ferrari this time, and not as a budget alternative, so figure $150-200k? Lexus LFA is going to come in at around 170K.



The NSX replacement’s primary competition at Ferrari and Lamborghini will come most likely in the form of the F430 and Gallardo, respectively. Spencer said the new NSX would be priced to compete with them, but did not give a specific dollar figure.

Pricing the NSX’s replacement at effectively double the price of the last model means Honda/Acura is positioning the car as a direct competitor to Europe’s elite supercars - not a budget alternative.

2011 Acura NSX: Timed Hot Lap on the Nurburging

NURBURG, Germany — Earlier this week Inside Line reported Honda CEO Takeo Fukui's bold demand that the 2011 Acura NSX must be faster around the Nürburgring than the Nissan GT-R and future Lexus LF-A, and now spy photographers have managed to time the latest NSX prototype during test laps around the 'Ring.

With one shooter manning a handheld stopwatch, KGP Photography reports the NSX is closing in on the GT-R's 7:29 hot lap, registering a 7:37 lap around the Nordschleife.

Eight seconds off the GT-R's best time isn't bad considering this is the NSX's first known visit to the Nürburgring in full production form.

Spy photographers also managed to peek inside the future NSX's ****pit, revealing part of the Acura's dash instrumentation and paddle shifters.
