First year of the B5 S4 in the US was 2000. About 15,000 were sold in the US between 2000 and 2002.

Uh, those numbers I gave are for cars legally sold in the US. It's easy to get an S4. It's the RS4 which wasn't sold in America.

Yeah, I said that before.

There really isn't any difference between a 1998 S4 and the 2000-2002 S4's.

The 1998 cars just had an older interior and more problems.

Any particular reason you'd want the '98?

because it'll be an 'antique' earlier
really tho because its almost the same and id be modding it so much i wouldnt want to do it to a newer car. and the car would cost less to start with. more money for mods!
