Felix Wankel:
Felix Wankel was born August 13, 1902 at Schillerstrasse 11 (4?) in Lahr in the Black Forest in Swabia in Germany
Felix Wankel conceived the idea of a rotary engine in 1924
In 1933 he applied for a patent for a DKM engine, which he received in 1936
The first truly functional Wankel rotary engine was a DKM type that ran in February 1957
The first carbrand to use The Rotary engine was NSU, which cooperated with Dr Wankel and his employees to make the rotary engine run smoothly.
(not a easy task) "By May (1957) a prototype was able to run for two hours and produce 21 bhp"
The engine ran for two hours by the end of May at 21 bhp. By June 1958 it had survived a 100 hour test.
NSU road tested the Wankel in 1960 for the first time.
specs:
Displacement 1 x 497 cc
Horsepower 50 bhp @ 5000 rpm, 54 bhp @ 6000 rpm
Torque 52 lb-ft @ 2500 rpm, 54 @ 3000, 57 @ 3500 rpm
Top Speed 95 mph
Felix Wankel invented it, NSU tested and developed it and used in their spider which could be bought in 1964 to the public.
