I did some research for you (yay for me). It's is called a welded open, simply for the fact that you would weld an lsd. And yes, it's the spider gears that are welded together. Basically you are locking them together at all times. This causes both tires to spin together. It acts more like a locker than an lsd, since an lsd will slip a little (hence the name limited slip differential). IMO you would be much better off finding a decent lsd to put in rather than have one welded.
