Thats because you think all American beer is the same.
If you explore what all we have to offer, you'd see that there are breweries putting out just as good a product as what there is in Europe.
For instance, Shiner brewery in TX, Yuengling brewery in PA, Sam Adams in Boston, Stone Brewery in CA.
For point of reference, I think the best beer out of Europe comes from Germany. Breweries like Weihenstaphaner - who make a great hefeweissen , Paulaner - who make the best oktoberfest, with Ayinger and Spaten tying for second. Belgium has St. Sebastian, which is damn good but 3 times as expensive as other good beers here.
Now Britain has SOME good stuff. Samuel Smith comes to mind first, then Bass. I've heard Fullers does good work, but I haven't had it.
As far as Whiskey, it all depends on your taste. I've had Scotch from every region they put out, and some it is just plain aweful (Islay comes to mind). I think my favorite was the Macallan Cask Strength.
For American whiskey, Small batch Bourbon is tops. Bookers or Bakers are two that come to mind. Although Jack Daniels still tastes as good as the premium stuff, and its usually 1/2 the cost.
