The S2000 didn't even launch. If he was racing, he would have pulled a car or two off the line and then the Cobalt could have caught him.

That is what happens when an S2000 is launched. Beat the GTO and Stang, although the GTO walked right past him, and the GT, well, it lost by 3 cars. And exhaust on a S2000 is worth about 3 whp.

If the Cobalt was faster than the M3, he would have pulled it from the beginning, it's a SC, not a Turbo, no LAG. I have raced a SS SC with intake/exhaust/"chip" and he got me from the hit, but I caught him on the top.

Side by side? So it's safe to say that if the M3 pulled right away, that the Cobalt wasn't even close to being as fast as your buddies.

Maybe from a roll, but from a dig the RWD will jump out and you'll have to catch him. I did this in my Miata. Raced a GS-T with 260whp from a 50 punch and he would put 4-5 cars on me to 110, pulling strong. But from a dig, he didn't catch me till I hit 90. This was when I had 122whp (previous owner never tightened the spark plugs). Oh, and I DON'T launch well, yet still yanked 3 cars from the dig.
