Venting to atmosphere will upset the air/fuel mixtures in cars equipped with an Air Flow Meter. The air is measured, then fuel added to suit. If the air is released, then you end up with to much fuel- this can cause back fires, damaged cat, flat/dead spots on/after gear change.

Depending on where you are situated it may also be against the law to vent to atmosphere.

My opinion is to rip the bov off all together. (ps: to those that will talk about improved turbo spool time and turbo life- f..k off. I don't believe any of it based on my experiences)
