I've owned a few older VWs, including an 84 Mk I GTI, before purchasing my 24V VR6. Let me tell you this: 1.4 litres is not exactly going to get you a fast 1/4 mile time without forced induction. As a matter of fact, it's quite an oxymoron. My Mk I had a built 2.0L 8V motor out of a 95 GTI. It had a cold air intake, ECU chip, BroSpeed header, G-grind cam, Magnaflow exhaust, and a close-ratio drag tranny. Still, it only produced about 140hp at the flywheel, roughly 110hp at the wheels. You're gonna have to do some incredible shit to that 1.4L to make it run even a decent time in the 1/4 mile. My advice is: A) Get blown (supercharger, turbo, etc...) and spend a lot of money on parts (suspension, some racing slicks, a waaaay better tranny than you have now, etc...) B) Spend a lot of money on the essential motor parts and suspension, then slap a Webber side-draft or two onto the motor, construct a rollcage, gut the interior and make yourself a potent little track racer. C) Motor swap with all of the above.
Making your 1.4L into a drag car is like building a schoolbus for the slalom course.....it doesn't make too much sense but it can be done, at great cost. The decision is entirely yours, so good luck and keep on DUBBIN!
