I disagree. I see it time and time again at local track days. The RX7 is the better handling car. AWD is all well and good but really its major advantage is in the wet. Lower cog, beter f/r balance- physics dictates what handles better- the rx7. Notice how in all of the worlds top motorsport classes the vehicles are rwd (except for WRC of course)
One R32 GTR that come to these track days is full of Group A Gibson Motorport gear (Gibson used to run the Nissan factory Grp A effort in Aus). This car is ~600hp, has had massive ammount of money thrown at it and is very fast. But an FD with 400hp and less money spent is almost as quick (within a few tenths anyway)......
I also have a video of stock R34, RX7, Sti EVOs etc- (probably been posted on here) and the RX7 took the win and the fastest lap time (at Tsukuba spelling?) The R34 was very very close though.
I will state it again, although I have an RX7 (1st gen) my all time favourite touring car is the R32 GTR. My next car will not be one though- it will be an FD for various reasons. Initial cost is similar, upgrade parts are more affordable for the FD, broken parts are more affordable to replace, An FD is easier on brakes and tyres due to it much lower weight. All very important for someone on a budget.
