No, torque is not the be all and end all of performance.. but be realistic with your analogies with the tractor. I think another way of looking at it is asking the question what do you think is going to win: 200 hp backed up by 200 tq or 200hp with 120 lbs/ft tq everything else being equal? Torque shouldnt trump everything else in the performance equation, but I think its importance is underplayed.
Somewhere along the line, the marketing arms of certain manufacturers convinced the buying public that low and mid range performance was bad and that waiting for the power to come in at 6000 rpm was supposed to be a good thing. I dont doubt that the RX8 is faster than a 3, but with its anemic torque curve, it has to be driven EXACTLY right to get its best results (which arent that good to begin with).

The RX8 is faster than a 3. Here, the 3 is modded sufficently, or the RX8 driver couldn't steer. I'm leaning more towards the 3 being modded but I reckon there is probably room for driver improvement also.
